Guardrail Height — 42 Inches Minimum
Balconies and elevated decks more than 30 inches above the ground must have guardrails at least 42 inches tall. Many older California homes still have 36-inch railings that no longer pass inspection. We extend them quickly using matching materials.

Baluster Spacing — 4 Inch Maximum Gap
The gaps between your stair spindles or railing balusters cannot be wider than 4 inches — a child's head must not be able to fit through. We add intermediate balusters or cable runs to close any gaps that are too wide.

Your handrail must be shaped so a hand can fully wrap around it — flat or overly wide decorative rails often fail this test. We install secure, comfortable handrails in wood or steel that look great and pass inspection.
