1. Handrail Safety (CBC Section 1014)

Handrail Height: Measured vertically from the leading edge of tread nosings, the handrail height sits between 34 and 38 inches. Graspable Profile (Type I / II): The rail is circular (1.25" to 2.0" outer diameter) or has approved perimeter finger recess channels (Not a flat 2x4 board). Handrail Continuity: The handrail is continuous for the full flight of stairs from the top riser to the bottom step without mid-flight breaks. Wall Clearance & Terminations: Minimum 1.5 inches clear space between the handrail and wall; rail ends terminate into a solid newel or wall return.

2. Guardrails & Infill Spacing (CBC Section 1015)

42-Inch Landing Guard Height: Any open landing, mezzanine, balcony, or deck elevated >30 inches above the floor/grade below measures at least 42 inches high. 4-Inch Sphere Rule: No opening between balusters, horizontal cables, or glass standoffs allows a 4-inch rigid sphere to pass through. 6-Inch Riser Triangle: The triangular opening formed by the bottom rail, tread, and riser does not allow a 6-inch sphere to pass. Structural Rigidity (200 lb Test): The guardrail and starting newel post do not wobble or deflect when pushed firmly with lateral force.
