Cable and solid rod look similar in a photograph and behave very differently in practice. The deciding factor is usually run length. On this Huntington Beach oceanfront deck we had 41 feet of continuous guard, and solid rod over that distance would have needed intermediate posts every 4 feet to control deflection.
Cable let us go to 8-foot bays with tensioned 316 stainless runs, halving the number of posts crossing the ocean view. The trade-off is maintenance: cable stretches slightly in its first year and needs re-tensioning, which we schedule as a follow-up visit rather than leaving to the homeowner to notice.
Structural Challenge:
Cable tension imposes significant inward load on the end posts — on a run this long the accumulated tension is considerable. Both terminal posts required structural reinforcement into the deck framing before any cable was pulled.
Engineered Solution:
Tensioned 316 cable in 8-foot bays with structurally reinforced terminal posts, plus a scheduled first-year re-tensioning visit.
