Loft Mezzanine Rod Guard for a Converted Long Beach Warehouse
About This Project
Converted warehouse spaces have a particular railing problem: anything too refined fights the building, and anything too raw looks like it was left over from the warehouse days. This Long Beach live/work unit had a 34-foot open mezzanine edge that needed a guard meeting residential requirements inside a shell that is unmistakably industrial.
We used horizontal solid rod in a mill finish rather than a polish, with visible mechanical fasteners at each post base. The detailing is deliberately honest — you can see how it is put together — which suits the building. The long run was broken into five bays so the rod spans stay within deflection limits without adding a mid-rail.

Challenges on Site
The existing mezzanine deck was poured concrete over metal deck with no reliable embed locations. Every post base required a core-drill and epoxy anchor, set out after scanning to avoid the deck flutes and existing conduit.

Mill-finish horizontal rod in five structural bays, with exposed epoxy-anchored base plates as a deliberate design element.

Common Questions
Do loft mezzanines need residential or commercial railings?
In a live/work unit it depends how the space is classified on the permit. Residential guard heights are lower than commercial, so the classification is worth confirming before fabrication — rebuilding to a taller guard afterwards is expensive.
