White Oak and Blackened Steel Stair in a Malibu Canyon Home
About This Project
This Malibu canyon home is all natural material and long horizontal lines, and the original stair — carpeted treads, painted balusters — belonged to a different house entirely.
We rebuilt it in rift-sawn white oak. Rift-sawn rather than plain-sawn matters here: it produces a straight, uniform grain without the cathedral figuring of plain-sawn oak, which suits a minimal interior and costs roughly a third more. The balusters are 1/2" blackened steel at close spacing, deliberately thin so the oak reads as the primary material and the metal almost disappears into shadow.
What the Homeowner Needed
Replace a carpeted stair with something that matches a minimal, natural-material canyon house.
Challenges on Site
Rift-sawn oak is cut at a specific angle to the growth rings, which produces significant waste and means colour matching across a whole stair requires ordering from a single flitch. We selected and reserved the material before starting demolition.
How We Solved It
Rift-sawn white oak from a single flitch for grain consistency, with slim blackened steel balusters kept visually secondary.
Project Highlights
- ✓ Rift-sawn oak from one flitch
- ✓ 1/2" blackened steel balusters
- ✓ No ornamental profiles anywhere
Common Questions
What is the difference between rift-sawn and plain-sawn oak?
Rift-sawn is cut at roughly 30-60 degrees to the growth rings, producing straight uniform grain with no cathedral figuring. It wastes more of the log so it costs more, but it is far more consistent across a run of treads — which matters on an open stair where you see every tread at once.
Project Overview
Rift-sawn white oak with slim blackened steel balusters — warm timber, minimal metal, nothing ornamental.
