Wind-Rated Glass Deck Railing Above Manhattan Beach

About This Project

Rooftop decks in Manhattan Beach have a usability problem more than a safety problem — the afternoon onshore wind makes them unpleasant from about 2pm. This homeowner wanted the glass guard to function as a windbreak so the deck was usable all day.

That changes the engineering completely. A guard rail is designed for a load applied by a person leaning on it; a windbreak carries sustained lateral pressure across its full area. We increased the glass to 5/8" tempered, tightened post spacing, and had the base connections calculated for the wind pressure rather than the guard load, which turned out to be the governing case.

What the Homeowner Needed

A rooftop guard that also blocks the afternoon onshore wind well enough to make the deck usable in the afternoon.

Challenges on Site

Post-mounted glass at this height meant every base plate connection needed to be verified against uplift as well as lateral load. The existing deck framing needed blocking added at four post locations before anything could be anchored.

How We Solved It

Upgraded to 5/8" glass with tightened post spacing, base connections engineered for sustained wind pressure rather than guard load.
