Rod Railing That Keeps the Catalina View at Rancho Palos Verdes
About This Project
This Rancho Palos Verdes property looks southwest toward Catalina, and the interior stair runs directly across that view. The previous guard was a painted wood balustrade with 3" balusters — safe, code-compliant, and visually a picket fence across the best thing about the house.
We replaced it with 1/2" horizontal stainless rod at maximum permitted spacing. Going down to 1/2" rod rather than the more common 5/8" was deliberate: at typical viewing distance the thinner section nearly disappears, and the shorter spans on this stair meant we did not need the extra stiffness. The result is a guard you look through rather than at.
What the Homeowner Needed
Maximum view retention through an interior guard, without compromising the guard height the hillside elevation required.
Challenges on Site
RPV's hillside setting meant the stair had an unusually tall guard requirement at the open side. More height normally means more visual obstruction — we offset that by reducing rod diameter and increasing post spacing to the maximum the rod section would allow.
How We Solved It
Reduced rod diameter to 1/2", maximised post spacing within the rod's span capacity, and used a slim satin cap so no single element reads as heavy.
Project Highlights
- ✓ View-first specification
- ✓ Slimmer 1/2" rod section
- ✓ Maximised post spacing
Common Questions
Does a thinner rod still meet code?
Yes, provided the infill resists the required load and the 4-inch sphere rule is satisfied. Rod diameter affects span, not compliance — so thinner rod simply means posts closer together, or a shorter span between them.
Project Overview
A hillside home where the whole point was what you can see through the railing, not the railing itself.
Materials & Details
- 1/2" 316 Stainless Rod
- Slim Profile Posts
- Satin Stainless Cap
We bought the house for that view and spent ten years looking at it through a fence. Now we actually see it from the stairs.
