Cable railing is usually specified outdoors, but its real advantage — visual transparency — matters just as much in a narrow interior. This Redondo Beach townhome has a three-storey stair in a stairwell barely wider than the flight, and the original solid balustrade made climbing it feel like walking through a tunnel.
Raked cable on an interior stair is harder than horizontal cable on a deck. The cable meets each post at an angle, so standard perpendicular fittings do not seat correctly — angled swage terminals are required at every termination, matched to the specific rake of the flight. Get that wrong and the cable bears on the edge of the fitting and eventually frets through.
Structural Challenge:
Three flights at slightly different rakes, because the middle flight had been rebuilt at some point by a previous owner. Each flight needed its own terminal angle specification rather than one set repeated three times.
Engineered Solution:
Raked cable with angled swage terminals specified per flight, under a slim oak cap rail.
The stairwell is the same size and feels completely different.
