Interior Cable Stair Railing in a Redondo Beach Townhome
About This Project
Cable railing is usually specified outdoors, but its real advantage — visual transparency — matters just as much in a narrow interior. This Redondo Beach townhome has a three-storey stair in a stairwell barely wider than the flight, and the original solid balustrade made climbing it feel like walking through a tunnel.
Raked cable on an interior stair is harder than horizontal cable on a deck. The cable meets each post at an angle, so standard perpendicular fittings do not seat correctly — angled swage terminals are required at every termination, matched to the specific rake of the flight. Get that wrong and the cable bears on the edge of the fitting and eventually frets through.
What the Homeowner Needed
Open up a narrow three-storey interior stairwell without reducing guard performance.
Challenges on Site
Three flights at slightly different rakes, because the middle flight had been rebuilt at some point by a previous owner. Each flight needed its own terminal angle specification rather than one set repeated three times.
How We Solved It
Raked cable with angled swage terminals specified per flight, under a slim oak cap rail.
Project Highlights
- ✓ Three flights, three terminal angles
- ✓ Angled swage fittings throughout
- ✓ Stairwell reads significantly wider
Common Questions
Can cable railing be used on interior stairs?
Yes, and it is particularly effective in narrow stairwells where a solid balustrade makes the space feel enclosed. The key detail is angled swage terminals matched to the stair rake — perpendicular fittings will fret the cable over time.
Project Overview
Cable indoors, on a narrow three-storey townhome stair where anything solid would have made the stairwell feel like a corridor.
