Cable Railing Retrofit After a Failed Seal Beach Inspection
About This Project
This Seal Beach deck failed inspection on an existing cable railing, and the homeowners were surprised because the cables were correctly spaced. Spacing is only half the requirement.
Cable infill must also resist deflection — a 4-inch sphere must not pass through under a specified load, not merely at rest. The original installation used cable at the right spacing but under insufficient tension and with posts too far apart, so pushing on the cables opened the gaps well beyond the limit. We rebuilt it with intermediate posts, correct tensioning, and cable routed through the intermediate posts rather than past them, which is what actually controls deflection between bays.
What the Homeowner Needed
Bring a failed cable deck railing into compliance without rebuilding the deck.
Challenges on Site
Retrofitting intermediate posts into an existing deck without visible patching. Post bases were set on the existing joist lines, which dictated bay widths — not ideal spacing aesthetically, but it avoided cutting new blocking into a finished deck.
How We Solved It
Added intermediate posts on existing joist lines, re-tensioned to specification, and routed cable through rather than past intermediate posts.
Project Highlights
- ✓ Passed re-inspection first time
- ✓ No deck rebuild required
- ✓ Cable routed through intermediate posts
Common Questions
Why did my cable railing fail inspection?
Most often deflection rather than spacing. The 4-inch sphere rule applies under load, not just at rest — if pushing on the cables opens the gap, it fails. The usual causes are insufficient tension, posts spaced too far apart, or cable running past intermediate posts instead of through them.
Project Overview
The previous installer got the cable spacing right and the deflection wrong. Those are different requirements.
