Horizontal Rod Railing for a 1970s Torrance Split-Level
About This Project
This Torrance split-level had the problem almost every home of its era has: a solid stucco knee-wall separating the entry from the upper landing, blocking every bit of natural light the west-facing windows brought in. The homeowners did not want to move a wall or touch the structure — they wanted the room to feel open.
We removed the knee-wall cap, verified the framing could carry a guard load on its own, and installed 5/8" solid 316 stainless rod running horizontally between square stainless posts. Solid rod rather than cable was the right call here: the run was short enough that cable tension hardware would have been visually heavier than the infill itself, and rod holds a dead-straight line for decades without re-tensioning.
What the Homeowner Needed
Open up sightlines from the entry to the upper landing without structural remodeling, and keep the finish neutral enough to survive a future kitchen remodel.
Challenges on Site
The existing knee-wall was doing partial load duty for the landing joists, so it could not simply be demolished. We opened the drywall, sistered the rim joist, and transferred the load before removing the cap — which is why the guard could then be post-mounted rather than wall-mounted.
How We Solved It
Load-transferred the knee-wall, then post-mounted a horizontal solid-rod guard with a white oak cap that ties into the existing floor tone.

Common Questions
Is solid rod better than cable railing?
For shorter runs, usually yes. Cable needs tensioning hardware at each termination and periodic re-tensioning; solid rod holds its line permanently and reads cleaner over spans under about 8 feet. On longer runs cable becomes more economical.
Can you remove a knee-wall without structural work?
Only after verifying what it carries. In this case the wall carried part of the landing load, so we transferred that to a sistered rim joist first. Never assume an interior knee-wall is purely decorative.
