About This Project
Traditional balustrades get a bad reputation because the builder-grade version is genuinely poor: hollow balusters, a stapled shoe rail, and a handrail that flexes when you lean on it. Done properly it is a different product.
On this Torrance new construction we used solid turned balusters mortised into the tread rather than face-nailed, a proper mortised shoe rail, and newel posts that are structurally anchored through the framing rather than sitting on a plate. The handrail is stained dark against painted white balusters — a deliberately conventional palette, executed to a standard that makes the convention look considered rather than defaulted to.

Challenges on Site
Mortising balusters into finished oak treads leaves no margin for error — an oversized or misplaced mortise cannot be hidden. Every mortise was drilled from a jig referenced off the tread nosing rather than marked individually.
How We Solved It
Solid mortised balusters, a true mortised shoe rail, and newels anchored through the framing rather than surface-fixed.

Common Questions
Why does my traditional stair railing wobble?
Almost always the newel posts. If a newel is surface-fixed to the floor or sitting on a plate rather than anchored through the framing, the whole balustrade flexes at that point. Retrofitting a proper newel anchor usually fixes a wobbly railing completely.
